Flight Mode Focus: Unlocking Productivity from the Sky
I recently took a flight and, once again, something surprising (but not so surprising) happened, I got more done in those few hours in the air than I often do in a full workday on the ground. Ever felt that way?
There’s something about being 30,000 feet in the sky that brings laser focus. No laundry calling your name, no social media scroll sessions, no “quick trip” to the fridge for a snack. Just you, a cramped seat, and a window to the clouds.
I’ve been thinking about why I’m so productive on planes and more importantly, how to bring that airplane mindset into my everyday life.
So why are we more productive on planes?
Here are a few reasons:
Limited Distractions
You’re not getting texts, calls, or random notifications. You can’t switch the laundry, vacuum the rug, or answer the door.A Defined Timeframe
You know exactly how long you have. “This flight is 2 hours, I’ve got 2 hours to make the most of it.”No Internet (or Limited Access)
Unless you pay for it (and even then, it’s spotty), there’s no mindless web browsing. You’re offline and undistracted.A Change in Environment
You’re not at your usual desk. You’re in a new space, and sometimes, that jumpstarts new focus.A Sense of Escape
You’ve left your to do list behind. You’re mentally “above” the chaos for a moment, which creates clarity. No Multitasking
You’re physically confined to one small tray table. You can’t do five things at once. And that’s a gift.
How to Bring the Airplane Productivity Home
Now, clearly we can’t recreate the legroom (or lack of it) and turbulence at home, but we can apply the principles. Here's how:
Create Distraction Free Time Blocks
Silence notifications. Put your phone in another room. Let people know you’re unavailable for the next hour.Work Within a Set Timeframe
Use a timer. Give yourself a flight length work sprint. “I have 90 minutes. Let’s go.”Go Offline
Disconnect from Wi-Fi or use apps like Freedom or Focus to block websites. Trust me, your work doesn’t need the internet as often as you think.Change Up Your Space
Sometimes just working in a different room or even rearranging your desk, can create fresh energy.Mentally Take Off
Try starting your work session with a prayer, short walk, or moment of stillness. Mentally elevate yourself above the noise of the day.Do One Thing at a Time
Try “single tasking.” Pick one goal, one task, one project and stay in that lane until it’s done.
Final Boarding Call
You don’t need to be 30,000 feet in the air to tap into focused, intentional work. The plane just strips away the clutter and we can do that too.
So the next time you're tempted to wait for the next flight to be productive, remember: the mindset matters more than the mile high altitude.
Let’s bring that plane-level focus down to earth.
